Butterflies are free

The children of Home Sweet Home, the preschool of Alternatives in Action, released five classroom butterflies into the community garden this morning. All five had hatched last week in the preschool and the children got an opportunity to study them in detail before setting them free.

Say Goodbye to Summer

Today Alternatives in Action concluded their 2009 HOME Project Summer Leadership "Test Your Greatness" program. There were warm acknowledgments all around, a wonderful free burrito lunch courtesy of Chipotle in Alameda, t-shirt signings for the "Test Your Greatness" youth staff and a tangled web game that gave everyone an opportunity to share what they gained from the program. The 60 East Bay youth that participated in the intense 5 week program spent the past two nights showing the community their Presentations of Greatness, which included performances of graphic arts, drama, dance and music.

Now begins the big cleanup of the summer program to prepare for welcoming our new and returning BASE High School staff on Monday, August 3, 2009 and for the first day of school on Monday, August 24, 2009.

It's the little things...

or in this case, a really big thing. Alternatives in Action now has a giant shipping container on campus for storage. Just part of the preparation for opening our high school, BASE, on August 24, 2009...

eScrip

Alternatives in Action now has eScrip!! “E” what you might ask? Let’s say “e” for economics. This “e” is a way to even out the tough economics that we face trying to cut down on expenses and increase funds. Alternatives in Action has enrolled in a program where everyone can participate in the job of fundraising while you do your everyday shopping.

Very easy… just follow these simple steps:

1. Log on to http://www.escrip.com

And there you will find information of what eScrip is all about.

2. Click on “sign up now”

3. Click on group ID #500001249

4. Click on “Alternatives in Action”

5. Fill out all your information

6. Register your cards by name and number.

7. Register your Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, etc

8. If you shop at Macy’s then you can add that card, otherwise hit next.

And that's it. You are now signed up.

Automatically contributions are deposited into our account when you use your designated cards. Now if you are an online shopper, we have a program for you also. Go to the Online Mall. This is perfect way to find business where your purchases can contribute to our account. You can even download the “Auto Earn” so that every time you shop with a participating online merchant your contributions are calculated automatically.

Ok, now you have some additional information about the letter “e”, so let’s enthusiastically endorse and exercise our right to eScrip.

Oakland Tribune Tower

Alternatives in Action youth got a rare opportunity to take an insider's tour of the Oakland Tribune tower in Oakland, California on Sunday, July 13, 2009. BASE High School student and Alameda resident, Daniel J. Zuranich, stands on the highest point of the tower with Alameda in the background.

Oakland Museum Field Trip

HOME Project's Summer Leadership Program took their first Friday field trip to Oakland Museum of California. The youth and staff were able to enjoy a new exhibit called The African Presence in México: From Yanga to the Present which is a look at the little-known history of enslaved Africans brought to Mexico in the 1500s and their contributions to Mexican culture. They also toured the Natural Sciences Gallery. After viewing the exhibits, our youth spent time playing lawn games in the Museum's courtyard.
